On March 24, 2016, 58-year-old Terri Treadway, a female resident of Chardon, Ohio, was fatally shot at Hamlet Village, a retirement community in Chagrin Falls. Terri, who was employed as a housekeeper at the facility, was one of two victims in this tragic incident; the other was 58-year-old Catherine Sutter, also a housekeeper, from Burton, Ohio. Both women were on duty when the shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m.
The perpetrator was identified as 56-year-old Frank Staton, a chef at Hamlet Village and Terri Treadway's boyfriend. According to reports, Staton had been living with Terri in her Chardon apartment since the previous summer. Neighbors noted that the couple had been experiencing relationship issues, with allegations of infidelity causing tension between them. On the morning of the shooting, Staton confronted Terri at their workplace, leading to the fatal encounter.
After shooting both Terri and Catherine, Staton attempted to take his own life but survived. He was found unresponsive in a stairwell at the facility and was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition under police guard. A loaded handgun and shell casings were recovered at the scene. Staton later admitted to the shootings, leading to his arrest.
Following his recovery, Staton was indicted on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, and four counts of felonious assault, each accompanied by firearm specifications. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced accordingly. The motive behind the shootings was linked to domestic issues between Staton and Treadway, with Sutter being an unintended victim caught in the tragic event.
