Enrique Straughter, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 15, 2016, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. He was a senior at Reynoldsburg High School and enjoyed playing basketball at the local recreation center. The circumstances surrounding his death involved a fatal shooting near his apartment in the 2100 block of Lavenham Road.
The investigation into Enrique's death led to the arrest of Damon L. Taylor, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident.
Taylor became a suspect shortly after the shooting when police found his mother's car, which he had taken without permission, abandoned near the crime scene. Additionally, a key fob from the car and a piece of a handgun containing both Straughter's blood and Taylor's DNA were discovered at the scene.
Taylor was eventually tried as an adult in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. In 2019, a jury convicted him of murder with a gun specification. Although Taylor was acquitted of the more serious charge of aggravated murder, he was found guilty of committing the murder while engaging in felonious assault. The court sentenced him to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years.
The case took another turn when the Ohio Supreme Court was asked to reinstate Taylor's murder conviction after it was overturned on procedural grounds by the 10th District Court of Appeals in 2022. The appeal cited court precedent that murder, as a category one offense by juveniles, must be bound over to adult court. The outcome of this appeal remains pending.
