In the late summer of 2022, a dispute between two men in Detroit escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving one man dead on the front porch of a home. On the morning of August 25, 2022, 32-year-old Dijon Nelson, a male resident of Detroit, was involved in a heated argument with another man on the 17800 block of Maine Street. The confrontation took a violent turn when both men reportedly drew firearms.
During the altercation, Dijon Nelson was shot multiple times. He was discovered on the front steps of the residence and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident unfolded near the intersection of Nevada and Joseph Campau avenues, shaking the local community. Investigators at the scene recovered three weapons, indicating the volatile nature of the dispute. Tragically, there were children present inside the home at the time of the shooting.
In the days following the shooting, police identified 34-year-old Larnell Fredrick Smith, also of Detroit, as the suspect. Smith was taken into custody and subsequently charged in connection with Nelson's death. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Smith with one count of second-degree murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm.
Larnell Fredrick Smith was arraigned on August 28, 2022, in 36th District Court, where his bond was set at $500,000 cash. Following his arraignment, a probable cause conference was scheduled for September 8, with a preliminary examination set for September 15 of the same year.
