Two of Fletcher-Garrett's children, aged 15 and 17, were present in the home at the time. The 15-year-old managed to escape and alert neighbors, while the 17-year-old hid in her bedroom and remained on the phone with a 911 dispatcher for nearly an hour as SWAT units handled the situation.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted local police in the investigation, but no further arrests or litigations were pursued as the incident was determined to be a murder-suicide.
