Jaylen Kinney, a 24-year-old man from Hamilton, Ohio, was fatally shot on March 23, 2017, which was his birthday. He was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The Hamilton Police Department ruled his death a homicide and launched an investigation.
In the course of the investigation, Hamilton detectives identified Marquis Hunter, a 30-year-old man, as the suspect. Hunter was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 19, 2017, with the assistance of U.S.
Marshals. He faced charges of murder and weapons under disability. Hunter had a prior conviction for felonious assault in 2010.
During the trial, it was revealed that Hunter had been involved in a previous shooting incident in February 2017, where he was shot in the leg outside the Hard Times bar in Hamilton. Evidence suggested that Kinney and another individual had been involved in the earlier incident. On October 26, 2017, Hunter pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a gun specification and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
