Rae’venna Faircloth-Thomas, a 24-year-old African American woman from Youngstown, Ohio, tragically lost her life on June 23, 2017. She was found shot to death in an SUV on Oneta Avenue on the city's West Side. The Mahoning County Coroner's Office confirmed her identity and cause of death.
The investigation into Rae’venna's death led to the arrest of Dashonti Baker, who was later found guilty of her murder. Baker was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The court determined that the murder was not premeditated, but rather occurred due to a property dispute between Baker and Rae’venna. Baker faced a mandatory sentence of 18 years to life in prison.
In addition to Baker, Barraya Hickson, Baker's co-defendant, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. The investigation revealed that a distinctive car linked to the crime was found at Hickson's residence. The case drew significant attention due to the close relationship between Rae’venna and Baker, who referred to each other as "brother" and "sister".
Rae’venna's family, deeply affected by her loss, held an impromptu praise and worship session in the courthouse's waiting area after the guilty verdict. Her mother, Virginia Faircloth, expressed the bittersweet nature of the day, acknowledging that while justice was served, it could not bring her daughter back.
