Brandon D. Meeks, a 29-year-old man from Columbus, OH, was tragically shot to death on December 11, 2017. Meeks, who was handicapped and used crutches, was found inside his South Side home on East Barthman Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police arrived in response to a shooting report. Two other individuals were injured during the incident, one of whom was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in stable condition.
The shooting occurred just 68 minutes
after Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs held a press conference urging the community to assist in solving the city's unsolved homicides and to call for peace. Investigators initially took two persons of interest into custody, but no arrests were made immediately following the incident. The police were trying to determine if the shooting was related to a robbery.
Subsequent investigations led to the indictment of Darnell Deejohn Vinson, a member of the Bloods gang, in connection with Brandon Meeks' murder. Vinson was charged with murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault. The indictment alleged that Vinson murdered Meeks and attempted to murder Darrell Meeks during the shooting incident on East Barthman Avenue. Vinson's arraignment was scheduled for January 2, 2018.
