Cortez Earl Ruffin, a 27-year-old African American male from Warrensville Heights, Cleveland, OH, tragically died on July 26, 2018. He was shot multiple times outside the Dog Pound Lounge on St. Clair Avenue while attempting to break up a fight that erupted during the filming of a music video by local rapper Q Money. Witnesses reported that after the initial shooting, another unknown male fired additional rounds at Ruffin while he was lying on the ground receiving first aid.
Despite efforts to save him, Ruffin succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The incident led to a significant police investigation, but no arrests were made immediately following the shooting. However, on August 20, 2018, Kelend Jones was charged with the murder of Cortez Ruffin and the attempted murder of five other individuals who were also shot during the incident. The case went to trial, and on October 15, 2020, Jones was convicted of murder and felonious assault in connection with Ruffin's death. The court found sufficient evidence to support the conviction, and Jones was sentenced accordingly.
The tragic death of Cortez Ruffin and the subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the dangers of violence associated with public gatherings and the importance of swift justice in such cases. The community mourned the loss of a young man whose life was cut short by senseless violence.
