On December 14, 2018, Damond L. Duke, Sr., a 45-year-old African American man from Akron, OH, was fatally shot after being carjacked. The incident occurred in the 800 block of Brown Street around 9 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they found Damond in the parking lot with a fatal gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene. The victim's car, a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, was stolen by an unknown male and later found at a nearby intersection.
There was no identified motive for the crime at the time.
Despite extensive investigations, the suspect remained unidentified. The Akron Police Department urged anyone with information to come forward, assuring anonymity for callers. The case drew significant attention from the community and law enforcement, but as of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open.
Damond Duke was well-known in his community and remembered fondly by friends and family. He graduated from Central-Hower High School in 1991 and later attended Wright State University. He completed truck driving school and worked at DDL Trucking. His passing was a tragic loss, and his loved ones continue to seek justice for his untimely death.
