Rashad Ameer Shahid, a 25-year-old African American male from Cincinnati, OH, tragically lost his life on November 21, 2019. His death was the result of a shooting that stemmed from an ongoing argument involving students from Northwest High School. The incident occurred near the school, shortly after classes had been dismissed for the day.
The fatal shooting involved several individuals, including 18-year-old Brian Holmes Jr., who did not attend Northwest High School, and a 17-year-old
Northwest student. The argument that led to the shooting began between the 17-year-old and the sister of another student, Dante Walker III. The two decided to resolve their conflict through a fight off school grounds. Holmes was asked by the 17-year-old to bring a gun to the fight. When the group encountered Shahid and others near Butterwick Drive and Newmarket Drive, Holmes pulled out a .45-caliber Sig Sauer pistol and fired several shots. Shahid was fatally wounded, and another individual, Walker, was shot in the left arm.
Following the shooting, witnesses reported seeing several males, including Holmes and the 17-year-old, put Shahid into the back of a car and attempt to drive him to the hospital. However, police intercepted the car in nearby Forest Park, where Shahid was found unconscious. Both Holmes and the 17-year-old were later found hiding in the backyard of a home on Grant Avenue.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Brian Holmes Jr. was indicted on charges of murder and felonious assault. The 17-year-old, identified as Jamar Flagg, was also charged with murder and faced the possibility of being tried as an adult. The case drew significant attention due to the tragic nature of the incident and the involvement of high school students.
