In the fading daylight of a Saturday afternoon, on November 28, 2020, the life of 20-year-old Kani Oliver was tragically cut short in a brazen shooting on Detroit's west side. Oliver, a young man remembered by his mother for his immense heart and belief in the good of people, was fatally wounded around 3:45 p.m. on Log Cabin Street, near Brighton Street.
Just moments before the fatal encounter, Oliver had picked up a friend. The two were waiting in his vehicle to get directions to pick up Oliver's brother when a newer model red Ford Explorer pulled up alongside them. A person inside the SUV motioned for Oliver to roll down his window. In a sudden and violent turn of events, shots were fired from the Explorer, striking Oliver. The suspect vehicle then sped away, heading north on Log Cabin toward McNichols.
Kani Oliver's mother, Angelica Harris, has spoken of her son's compassionate nature, recalling how he would want to help entire families in need, a testament to his generous spirit. In the wake of his death, she has pleaded for the community to break the silence that often shields perpetrators of violence.
Despite the public pleas for information and the offering of a cash reward of up to $2,500 by Crime Stoppers for any information leading to an arrest, the case remains unsolved.
