Curley Broughton, a 76-year-old man, was last seen at his residence in the 3300 block of Marcus Drive in Pensacola, Florida, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on May 27, 1995. He informed his grandson that he was going into his backyard to tend to his garden and expected to return within half an hour, but he never did. At the time of his disappearance, Broughton was wearing a plaid shirt, blue jeans, a red baseball cap, and a silver medical alert bracelet on his left wrist that was engraved with his name, address, and phone number.
Broughton's wife, who was watering the lawn, saw him walk away from their home and went to get her shoes and car keys to follow him. A neighbor reported seeing him attempting to get through a fence a few houses down the street. Following this, Broughton was seen going behind some homes near the railroad tracks. There was a possible sighting of him under the viaduct close to the J.E. Hall Center on Texar Drive. Despite suffering from Alzheimer's disease, which could cause confusion, he had no history of wandering off.
In the time leading up to his disappearance, Broughton had spoken of wanting to move back to his birthplace of Monroeville, Alabama, where he still had relatives. He had lived in Pensacola for the majority of his life. An extensive search of the area following his disappearance yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. Broughton's family believes he may have been picked up by a passing motorist who took him out of the Pensacola area. His case remains unsolved, and he has not been heard from since that evening.
