James R. Cooper III, a 31-year-old man from Barberton, OH, tragically died on October 21, 2020. He was involved in a confrontation outside a home on Wunderlich Avenue in Barberton, where he was shot multiple times. Cooper was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

Simmons II, a 39-year-old man from Norton, OH, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault, and having a weapon under disability. Simmons was found by officers from the Adult Parole Authority, the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, and the Akron Police Department, who arrested him on outstanding warrants and parole violations. He was arraigned in Barberton Municipal Court, and bond was set at $5 million.
The case remains under investigation by the Barberton Police Department and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. Simmons is currently held in the Summit County Jail awaiting further legal proceedings.
