Mikell Newell, 27, of Berkeley, was fatally shot on May 19, 2013, in East Oakland, California. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of 92nd Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Newell was with a friend, Jeron Smith, at the time of the shooting. Later, it emerged that Smith was questioned multiple times by another mutual friend, Lakisha Young, who believed he was withholding information about the killing.
