J’Yon Kolby-Lee Manson-Coleman, a 15-year-old African American male from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost his life on May 13, 2021. He was known affectionately as "JJ" or "Juixey Jay" and was deeply loved by his family and community. J’Yon was a former football player at Trotwood Middle School and enjoyed playing basketball, walking around the neighborhood, and swimming.
He was also involved in helping his cousin with her food truck.
The circumstances surrounding J’Yon's death were investigated by Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies who responded to an unrelated call on the day of the incident. They found J’Yon's body in a vehicle on Michigan Avenue, having been shot multiple times. Surveillance video, witness statements, and other evidence were used to identify Jamie Abrams, an 18-year-old from Dayton, as the shooter. Abrams was indicted on four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, and four counts of aggravated robbery. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was scheduled to be arraigned on September 14, 2021.
In a subsequent development, Jamie Abrams pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault in September 2022. As part of a plea agreement, the murder and aggravated robbery charges were dismissed, and Abrams was sentenced to 10 to 14 years in prison. The court also imposed additional time under the Reagan Tokes Act, which could adjust the sentence based on Abrams' behavior in prison.
The loss of J’Yon Kolby-Lee Manson-Coleman was a devastating event for his family and the community, and the legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for his untimely death.
