Dion McMillon, a 26-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on May 19, 2021, in East Liverpool, Ohio. McMillon was shot multiple times while sitting in his car on Mapletree Street, and his body was found in the vehicle. The incident was captured on video, showing a white Kia Soul entering the area, parking, and then someone exiting the vehicle and firing 13 bullets into McMillon's car window on the passenger side.
Tyrell Travers, a 26-year-old male from Wellsville, was identified as the shooter. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Travers had rented the white Kia Soul seen in the video footage. Travers was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and murder, both with firearm specifications. He was found guilty by a jury in May 2023 and subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional three years for using a firearm in the commission of the crime.
During the trial, Travers' former girlfriend, Alexis Teter, testified that Travers had told her he had "got Action," referring to McMillon, and that he was pleased with his actions. Teter also revealed that Travers had asked her to buy a gun for him after the murder, which she did out of fear for her safety. The court heard a recording of McMillon's last phone call, which was described as both horrific and disturbing by Judge Megan Bickerton.

In August 2024, the Seventh District Court of Appeals upheld Travers' murder conviction, affirming the life sentence without parole. The court ruled that the trial counsel was not ineffective and that the continuance granted to the state due to a witness's medical leave was reasonable.
