Johanna was also caring for her 8-year-old great-granddaughter at the time of her death. The perpetrator kidnapped the child but later returned her safely to her grandfather.
The suspect in Johanna's murder was identified as Malcolm
Fisher. Fisher had a history of violent crimes, including robbing multiple people at gunpoint and a recent misdemeanor assault charge. He was released from jail just a few months before the murder. Johanna had reported threats made by Fisher to the local 911 center the day before her death, but unfortunately, help arrived too late. Fisher was later charged with Johanna's murder.
Johanna's husband, Knute Huber, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Lucas County 911 Regional Council of Governments, claiming that the dispatchers' failure to act on the threats may have prevented her death. The lawsuit named three employees and Fisher as defendants.
