Dameire Thornton, a 19-year-old male of Black ethnicity, tragically lost his life on February 23, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. He was fatally shot in the Hilltop area of west Columbus, specifically in the 300 block of Whitethorne Avenue. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert just after 10:50 p.m. and found Thornton suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:08 p.m.
The investigation into Thornton's death led to the
arrest of Josiah Herring, a 21-year-old man, who was charged with murder. Herring was identified as the suspect after witnesses came forward and provided crucial information. According to court records, Herring admitted to shooting Thornton multiple times as he was walking away. Herring was previously arrested and charged with weapon under disability, and a search warrant of his phone revealed him posing with multiple firearms.
Herring was taken into custody on August 24, 2022, and is being held on a $1 million bond. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled, and the case is ongoing. The Columbus Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to submit a tip.
