Sorenta Hylton, a 31-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on April 25, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. She was asleep in her bed at her Southwest Side apartment on Vida Court when multiple rounds were fired into her residence. One of the bullets tore through a wall and struck Hylton in the shoulder and lung, leading to her death about an hour later. Hylton's three children, all under the age of 13, were also in the apartment at the time but fortunately were not injured.
The shooting was
determined to be a completely random act of violence. Surveillance footage from Hylton's apartment showed a Ford Fusion backing up to the building, with four individuals exiting the vehicle and opening fire with more than 60 rounds. The apartment was not the intended target, and the group also fired at a homeless couple sleeping in their car as they left the apartment complex, injuring one of them.
Four individuals were identified as suspects in the case: Isaiah Alexander, Tyreese Watkins, Dranoel Durham, and Dashae Tinsley. Isaiah Alexander, 23, admitted his role in the shooting and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 18 years. Tyreese Watkins, 21, and Dranoel Durham, 19, both pleaded guilty to murder and received the same sentence. Dashae Tinsley, 27, admitted to driving the shooters to the apartment and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault.
The investigation revealed that the suspects had targeted the wrong home, and none of the individuals in Hylton's apartment had any connection to the shooters. The tragic incident left Hylton's family devastated, and her father expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the senseless violence.
The case has drawn attention to the issue of random acts of violence and the devastating impact they have on innocent victims and their families. The legal proceedings against the suspects have brought some measure of justice, but the loss of Sorenta Hylton remains a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community safety.
