On June 9, 2022, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Cincinnati police responded to a reported shooting in the 6300 block of Beechmont Avenue in the Mt. Washington neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Anthony Harris, a Black male, suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, Mr. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Anthony Harris and his friend, 29-year-old Brandon Vannater, both Black males, had been consuming alcohol together prior to the
incident. The two men began handling a firearm owned by Mr. Harris. During this time, the weapon discharged, resulting in Mr. Harris's fatal injury. Authorities determined that the shooting occurred while both individuals were intoxicated and engaging in reckless behavior with the firearm.
Following the incident, Brandon Vannater remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived. He was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless homicide for causing the death of Anthony Harris. During a court appearance, the assistant prosecutor emphasized that combining alcohol consumption with firearm handling constitutes reckless behavior, not merely an accident. Mr. Vannater's bond was set at $500,000.
Anthony Harris was remembered by his family and friends as a devoted father to his three sons: Anthony Cordell Harris III, Olliver Maison Harris, and Sebastyn Greyson Harris. His obituary highlighted the profound loss felt by his loved ones and the community.
This tragic event underscores the dangers associated with mixing alcohol and firearms, serving as a somber reminder of the importance of responsible gun ownership and handling.
