Dennis Wilbert Allen, a 24-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a patrolman with the Four Oaks Police Department in North Carolina. On June 3, 1977, he was shot and killed while performing his duties. Patrolman Allen had stopped a suspicious vehicle on a service road approaching I-95. Unbeknownst to him, the driver of the vehicle had just committed a robbery and murdered another man minutes earlier.
As Patrolman Allen asked the driver for his identification and registration, the man
produced a .38 caliber revolver and shot him in the stomach. The suspect then shot Patrolman Allen multiple times in the back as he lay on the ground. The suspect and an accomplice fled the scene but were later apprehended. The accomplice was sentenced to 32 years in prison and died in prison on January 17, 1989. The shooter pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. He served 28 and a half years before being paroled in October 2006.
Patrolman Allen was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a Bronze Star recipient. He had served with the Four Oaks Police Department for only four months and was survived by his wife and a 1-year-old son. His death was a tragic loss for his family, friends, and the community.
