On the first of August in 2013, a harrowing chain of events culminated in the death of 30-year-old Eric Ramsey, an African-American male, following a violent crime spree and a final, fatal encounter with police. The tragic day began with the armed kidnapping of a female student from Central Michigan University. Ramsey commandeered her vehicle and took her to his home, where he bound and sexually assaulted her.
After the assault, Ramsey forced the young woman back into her car, now laden
with two gas tanks, and chillingly informed her of his intent to kill her. In a desperate bid for her life, the student leaped from the moving vehicle and found safety in a nearby residence, whose occupants promptly alerted the authorities. In a brazen act of further violence, Ramsey then doused that very house, with four individuals inside, in gasoline and set it ablaze, though one of the homeowners managed to extinguish the flames before they could fully engulf the home.
This set off a frantic police pursuit that stretched over 70 miles. The chase came to a dramatic end when Ramsey, now driving a sanitation truck, intentionally rammed a Michigan State Police cruiser. As a deputy exited his vehicle and approached the truck, the situation escalated, resulting in shots being fired and Ramsey being fatally wounded. In a haunting premonition of his own demise, Ramsey had earlier posted a message on his Facebook page stating, 'Well folkes im about to get shot. Peace'. Prior to this incident, Ramsey had a criminal record that included multiple assault convictions. Law enforcement continued to investigate the violent series of crimes that led to the fatal shooting.
