Paola Aguilera Ayala, a 24-year-old woman from Wilson, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on December 30, 2009. The incident was a result of a murder-suicide that occurred in the 4200 block of Iroquois Road. Paola, along with her boyfriend Miguel G. Guerra, was shot to death by her former boyfriend, whose name has not been released. The former boyfriend then turned the gun on himself, completing the tragic sequence of events.
The investigation revealed that Paola had a history of
domestic violence with her former boyfriend, including accusations of rape. She had attempted to obtain a restraining order against him but never followed through. The violence began when Paola started dating her new boyfriend, Miguel. On the morning of the incident, Paola returned home from her job at Alliance One Tobacco Co. Shortly after, her former boyfriend and another person arrived at her house in a royal blue Dodge truck. The former boyfriend entered the house and killed Miguel before chasing Paola into an adjacent yard and shooting her. He then turned the gun on himself.
Neighbors reported hearing screams and gunshots, followed by a vehicle driving away. The Wilson County Sheriff's Office found and interviewed a driver who witnessed the incident. The investigation also revealed that Paola had four children, three of whom were fathered by her former boyfriend. None of the children were home at the time of the shooting.
The tragic event left the community in shock and highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence. The authorities continued to investigate the case, seeking any additional information or witnesses that could provide further insights into the events leading up to the murder-suicide.
