She was shot multiple times by her ex-husband, Christopher John Bertrand, as she arrived at her workplace, Pier 1 Imports, in Cameron Village. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., and Kathleen was pronounced dead at the scene. Christopher Bertrand, 42, later committed suicide behind a nearby building, ending a daylong search for the gunman that had caused several local schools and stores to go on lockdown.
Kathleen Bertrand had previously sought a domestic violence protective order against her ex-husband due to his harassment and erratic behavior. Court documents revealed that she and her three children had gone into hiding at one point to escape Christopher's threats. Despite the protective order, Christopher continued to harass Kathleen and attempted to see their children daily, even though he was under investigation by child protective services. Kathleen had expressed fear for her safety and that of her children, stating that Christopher had threatened to commit suicide if he couldn't be with his children.
The couple had married in December 1992, and Kathleen had put her legal career on hold to raise their three children. As their marriage deteriorated, Christopher sought custody of the children, but Kathleen refused to move to Memphis with him. On the day of the shooting, Christopher confronted Kathleen in the parking lot of her workplace and shot her multiple times with a handgun. An autopsy later revealed that Kathleen had suffered eight gunshot wounds, including two to the head.
