Tony stumbled into the living room and died next to his uncle.
The Spencer Police Department, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, launched an investigation into the double homicide. The motive behind the attack was believed to be robbery, as the suspects were aware that Tony Walker was a drug dealer and likely had large sums of money at the house. In the aftermath of the murders, Kenneth Wayne Abel Jr., 28, was arrested and charged with two counts of felony murder. Abel, who had a prior conviction for armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon, was held without bond. Further investigation revealed that Abel, along with his cousins Darius Abel and James "Mikey" Robinson, planned the robbery and murder. Kenneth Abel accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testifying against his cousins, leading to his expected prison sentence of over 20 years.
