Jose Merced Huerta-Morales, a 36-year-old Hispanic male, was found dead inside his home in Browns Summit, North Carolina, on December 28, 2014. The discovery was made by his nephew, who had come to the house to help feed the chickens and rabbits that Huerta-Morales raised. When the nephew couldn't get Huerta-Morales to the door, he saw him lying on the floor inside the house.
Authorities were called to the scene at 7301 Friendship Church Road around 3:30 p.m. on that Sunday.
Upon arrival, they found Huerta-Morales bound with tape and suffering from a gunshot wound. The Guilford County Sheriff's Office immediately treated the case as a homicide investigation. Colonel Randy Powers from the Sheriff's Department mentioned that the medical examiner, Timothy McNeal, was assisting deputies in determining the time of death.
