The incident occurred at a house on West Harnett Street, where Longmire was found lying in the front yard with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Longmire often visited the house to exchange custody of his children with their mother.

The investigation into Longmire's death led to the identification of two suspects, brothers Jermale Tavaris Williams and Terry Lamont Williams. Jermale Tavaris Williams, 29, surrendered to authorities in Wake County and was charged with first-degree murder. Terry Lamont Williams, 33, was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Despite the arrests, the charges against the Williams brothers were later dropped due to contradicting eyewitness testimony. The case remains unsolved, and the Benson Police Department continues to seek information from the public to solve the homicide.
The autopsy report confirmed that Longmire died from multiple gunshot wounds.
