Joseph Shane Bowling, a 23-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on November 14, 2019, in Benson, North Carolina. Bowling was at the Scotchman gas station, located at 1230 N.C. Highway 210, where his mother worked the night shift. He often accompanied her during her shifts, and on that fateful night, he was there to ensure her safety. The incident occurred just a day after his 23rd birthday. During an armed robbery at the gas station, Bowling intervened to protect his mother.
He stood in front of her as the robbers demanded money and took both their phones. Despite his efforts to de-escalate the situation, one of the suspects opened fire, fatally shooting Bowling as he shielded his mother.
The Johnston County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the incident, identifying multiple suspects involved in the robbery and murder. Manuel Jamie Patterson, a 19-year-old male, was arrested in Fayetteville for his involvement in the robbery of the Safeway and Reedy Creek Gas and Grocery convenience store. While in custody, Patterson was charged with the homicide and robbery of the Scotchman convenience store. He faces charges of murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and felony conspiracy. Patterson is being held in the Johnston County Jail without bond.
Another suspect, Bobby Gene McLean Jr., also 19 years old, surrendered himself at the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. McLean was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is also being held in the Johnston County Jail without bond. The authorities are still searching for a third suspect, John Wesley Pettiway III, 21 years old, in connection with the Scotchman murder and robbery. The suspects are believed to be connected to other robberies in the area, and the investigation is ongoing.
Bowling's family and friends remember him as a hero who had a huge heart and was always willing to help others. His death has left a profound impact on his loved ones and the community. The gas station where the incident occurred paid for his funeral, and the family is raising money for the remaining expenses. The Johnston County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information and leads to bring all those responsible to justice.
