Shawn Cade-Oree, a 29-year-old man from Durham, NC, was tragically shot in the head on December 1, 2015, at a home located in the 2200 block of Concord Street. He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries on December 2, 2015. The incident appeared to have stemmed from a dispute and was not considered random by the police.
Following the shooting, three individuals were taken into custody but were later released without charges.
However, the investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Emmanuel Wiggins, a 20-year-old man from Durham, who was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was apprehended without incident in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn on N.C. 55 by members of the Durham Police Department’s Selective Enforcement Team. Additionally, Wiggins faced charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed gun.
Eric Gershon Wiggins, 25, also from Durham, was indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Cade-Oree's death. He surrendered to the police on January 11, 2016. The shooting prompted North Carolina Central University to issue a crime alert to students, as the incident occurred southwest of the university's campus.
The community was deeply affected by the tragic event, with neighbors recalling the sound of multiple gunshots and expressing their concerns about safety in the area. Despite the arrests and ongoing investigation, the motive behind the dispute that led to Cade-Oree's death remains unclear.
