Demetrius Alexander Williams, a 35-year-old Black man, was pulled into the kind of late-night chaos that can turn a routine Monday into a tragedy. On January 30, 2023, just after 10 p.m., gunfire erupted on the 1000 block of Geneva Road in Winston-Salem, near Ebert Street and Silas Creek Parkway, prompting calls for police to respond. By the time officers were working their way toward the scene, Williams had already made it to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He would not survive.
Investigators pieced together what happened in the parking lot: a confrontation that escalated fast. Police said evidence indicated there was a fight involving Williams in the parking area—described as the lot of an apartment complex—and that the dispute ended with shots fired. In the early hours after his death, the case was counted among the city’s homicides for the year, underscoring how quickly violence had already accumulated in Winston-Salem by the end of January.
As detectives worked the case, attention narrowed to a suspect. Authorities later obtained a murder warrant for Tyshaun Martrez Stevenson and arrested him in Thomasville. After the arrest, Stevenson was taken to the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center, where police said he was held without bond while the case moved toward an initial court date.
