On the morning of July 30, 2016, David Clint Watson was fatally shot at least twice in the chest. The incident occurred outside a mobile home near Bessemer City.
According to court testimonies, a panicked friend of Watson's ex-boyfriend knocked on the doors of the mobile home, leading to a confrontation that resulted in Watson's death. Naijii Salik Boyd, a 25-year-old male from Burlington, was identified as the alleged shooter. Boyd was charged with murder, five counts of kidnapping, and several related crimes.
Boyd's trial revealed that he had arrived at the mobile home with a semi-automatic .380-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol, which was allegedly stolen. The confrontation escalated when Watson, with his hands up, asked Boyd to leave. Boyd responded by shooting Watson. Boyd's defense argued that he acted in self-defense, but the prosecution presented a different narrative, highlighting Boyd's aggressive behavior and the presence of a firearm.
In March 2018, Superior Court Judge Jeff Hunt sentenced Naijii Boyd to six to eight years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the death of David Clint Watson. Boyd also received an additional one to two years in prison for related charges.
