On the night of his death, Derrick was outside an apartment in the public housing complex just south of downtown
Asheville when he was struck by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting. The bullet missed its intended target and fatally wounded Derrick. The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m., and Derrick's older brother was the first to find him.
