The investigation into Nekeshia Washington's murder led to the arrest of three individuals. Antonio Johnson, an 18-year-old, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. Akeen D. Hair, 22, and Akeem McIver, 23, were also charged in connection with Washington's death. Hair faced charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and a probation violation. McIver was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Washington's mother, Vicky McArthur, expressed her heartbreak over the loss of her daughter, who was well-liked within her community and known for her generosity. McArthur mentioned that Washington had been friends with Hair and had trusted him, which made the betrayal even more painful. The suspects allegedly robbed Washington of a $400 cell phone. District Attorney Billy West highlighted the senselessness of the crime, emphasizing that Washington lost her life over a relatively small amount of money.
The investigation into Washington's murder is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests. McArthur planned to hold a candlelight vigil outside the home where her daughter was murdered to commemorate what would have been Washington's 29th birthday on August 17. The community continues to mourn the loss of Nekeshia Washington, a young woman whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence.
