Marc Loren Mays, a 45-year-old male, was tragically shot and killed on September 3, 2018, in Cornelius, NC. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Admiral’s Quarters condominium complex on West Catawba at the foot of Westmoreland. Mays was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. According to police, Mays was shot during the course of a robbery. The suspects fled the scene in a dark green or blue-green mid-size SUV with a loud exhaust, possibly due to a mechanical issue.
Witnesses described the driver as an African-American male in his mid-20s, bald, and the passenger as a black male in his mid-20s, wearing a dark-colored hoodie and having scruffy facial hair. Mays' girlfriend, who was with him at the time, witnessed the shooting and struggled with the perpetrator over her purse. She was reportedly injured in the process.
The Cornelius Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, which was the town's first since 2012. They released photos and a video of the suspect vehicle and offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved.
Neighbors described Mays as a "decent guy" who worked smaller jobs involving computers and was always a good neighbor. The community was shocked by the violent incident, as the Admiral’s Quarters complex is typically quiet and peaceful.
