Benson Lamont Harris Lindsey, a 22-year-old Black male from Detroit, was killed on the night of October 18, 2021, in a sudden, close-range ambush at a Marathon gas station on the city’s west side near West Warren Avenue and Ashton. Police said he and his partner were seated inside their vehicle at the pump when two gunmen rushed in from behind, splitting to either side of the car and firing repeatedly into the front seats.
In the chaos, bullets tore through the vehicle while the couple’s infant remained inside, untouched, as the attackers fled into the night.
What made the scene even more haunting was what officers found in the back seat: the couple’s 9-month-old child was still in the car and survived without injury. Reports said the baby had been in his mother’s arms when the shooting began, and in the immediate aftermath Child Protective Services temporarily took custody before the child was later released to family. Relatives described the victims as parents trying to build a life—one that had already been stretched thin by worry, because their second baby had been born prematurely and was still hospitalized at the time of the shooting.
Investigators quickly framed the attack as deliberate rather than random. Police officials described it as a targeted shooting, and surveillance footage became central to the early narrative: the victims’ car sat momentarily still at the pump, then the two shooters sprinted up and opened fire from both sides, a coordinated move that suggested planning and intent. In the days that followed, grieving family members spoke publicly about the shock of seeing how quickly it happened, and how the violence didn’t just steal two lives—it left two children to grow up with only stories of their parents and questions about why they were chosen.
Within about two days, Detroit police announced arrests. Authorities said two people had been taken into custody and that a firearm was recovered, while also signaling that the investigation was still active and additional arrests were possible. Early reports did not publicly identify the people in custody or spell out specific charges or court proceedings in connection with the killings, leaving a gap between the relief of arrests and the longer road of proving what happened and why.
