Nicholas Williams, a 40-year-old African American man from Rural Hall, NC, was tragically murdered on February 10, 2019. The incident occurred at his home on Hallmark Drive, where he lived with his tenant, Norris Dwayne Rochelle. The two men got into an argument that escalated into a deadly confrontation. Rochelle shot Williams in the head, and during a FaceTime call with a friend in Craven County, he shot Williams a second time, which proved to be fatal.
Rochelle then traveled to Craven County to pick up his friend, and the two men returned to Rural Hall to dismember Williams' body and burn his remains in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Williams' parents arrived at the home looking for their son, and Rochelle lied to them, claiming that Williams had been dropped off at an apartment complex. Rochelle even drove Williams' parents to the apartment complex, but when they couldn't find him, they called law enforcement. Multiple detectives and deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office responded to the home to search for Williams. Rochelle continued to lie, insisting that Williams had been dropped off at the apartment complex. Meanwhile, Rochelle's friend drove the car containing Williams' remains to Craven County, where they were burned and abandoned.
The following day, Forsyth County detectives continued their investigation. Rochelle voluntarily went to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and agreed to be interviewed while a search warrant was being executed at the home on Hallmark Drive. Rochelle continued to deceive the detectives, but his friend eventually went to a police department in Craven County and confessed to the circumstances of Williams' murder and dismemberment. When confronted with his friend's confession, Rochelle changed his statement and claimed that he had killed Williams in self-defense. However, the physical evidence did not support Rochelle's version of events, and there was no evidence that Williams had attacked or assaulted Rochelle.
Rochelle was charged with multiple offenses related to the murder of Nicholas Williams. He pleaded guilty in Forsyth County Superior Court and was sentenced to multiple decades in prison. The case highlighted the brutal nature of the crime and the lengths to which Rochelle went to cover up his actions. The community was left in shock and mourning over the loss of Nicholas Williams, a man remembered for his kindness and generosity.
