Ervin Kenneth Steward, a 28-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on February 17, 2019, near the Onyx strip club on Minuet Lane in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. during the NBA All-Star Weekend. After the shots were fired, a friend of Ervin drove him a few blocks away from the scene to Seventy Seven Center Drive, where he was later found by the police.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to an assault with a
deadly weapon call and found Ervin Kenneth Steward with a gunshot wound in a parking lot at 5445 Seventy Seven Center Drive. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation revealed that the shooting took place in a nearby parking lot on Minuet Lane, and witnesses had moved Steward to another location.
On March 7, 2019, Nicholas Beatty, a 32-year-old male, was arrested and charged with the murder of Ervin Kenneth Steward. Beatty was found in Durham, North Carolina, and was brought to CMPD headquarters, where he was interviewed by homicide detectives. In addition to the murder charge, Beatty was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The CMPD, along with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the City of Durham Police, collaborated to apprehend Beatty.
The case remains under investigation, with homicide detectives continuing to interview witnesses and gather evidence. The CMPD has urged anyone with additional information about the crime to contact Crime Stoppers.
