April Oxendine, a 45-year-old woman from Shannon, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on May 27, 2019. She was found shot in the backseat of a pickup truck on N.C. Highway 71 North in Lumber Bridge. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when authorities received a 911 call from a convenience store on N.C.-71. Investigators believe that Ronchelle Raquan Lewis, an 18-year-old man from Fayetteville, shot into the truck on Russell Road in Shannon, killing Oxendine.
Two other people were in the truck at the time, but they were not injured.
Ronchelle Raquan Lewis was arrested early the next morning and charged with first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also wanted in Cumberland County for felony probation violation, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats, and resisting a public officer. The motive for the shooting appeared to be a dispute between Lewis and the driver of the pickup truck, Winston Oxendine, who is not related to the victim.
April Oxendine was well-known in her community and had lived with David Locklear in the Arrowhead Heights Apartments in Shannon for the past five months. Locklear described her as his housekeeper, friend, and someone who did everything for him. The loss of Oxendine has deeply affected those who knew her, and the community continues to mourn her death.
The case is being investigated by the Robeson County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Criminal Investigations Divisions. Anyone with information about the homicide or the whereabouts of Lewis is asked to contact the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.
