Kathleen Jean Couch Dills, a 47-year-old woman from Franklin, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on March 13, 2020. Kathleen was born on September 18, 1962, in Hyden, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Hazel Barger Rickman and the late Elzie Couch. Kathleen was known for her love of treasure hunting, rock collecting, quilting, and taxidermy. She was survived by her husband of 31 years, Joe Dills, and her children and stepchildren, along with numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
On the day of her death, Kathleen was found suffering from a gunshot wound at a vacant home in Macon County. The Macon County Sheriff's Office identified Robert Massung Jr. as the individual responsible for the shooting. Massung, who suspected someone of breaking into the vacant home, entered the property without permission and fired a 9mm handgun, striking Kathleen at least once. Kathleen's sister, who was also present at the scene, fled the residence and was later located by detectives.
Robert Massung Jr. was charged with felony voluntary manslaughter in connection with Kathleen's death. He was taken into custody and held at the Macon County Detention Center with a bond set at $200,000. The investigation into the incident continued, with the possibility of additional charges being filed. Detectives did not seek any additional suspects at that stage of the investigation.
Kathleen's death was a tragic event that left her family and community in mourning. Her funeral service was held on March 21, 2020, at Panco Community Church in Oneida, Kentucky, with burial following at Haystack Cemetery. The family received friends and condolences at Macon Funeral Home in Franklin, North Carolina.
