Following the shooting, Daniel Martin, a 56-year-old male from Thurmond, was charged with Jonathan's murder. Martin was arrested at the scene without incident and was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. Martin had a history of legal issues, including charges ranging from habitual driving while impaired to drug possession and assault. He was held in the Wilkes County Jail without bail.
