Christopher David "Chris" Ward, a 36-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on April 28, 2021, in Boone, North Carolina. Chris was a dedicated Sergeant with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office. He was conducting a welfare check at a residence on Hardaman Circle when he was fatally shot. The incident also claimed the life of K-9 Deputy Logan Fox, who was 25 years old.
The situation unfolded when the homeowner's employer reported that the homeowner, George Ligon, had not reported to
work or answered phone calls. Upon entering the home, Chris and Logan were met with gunfire. Chris was critically injured and transported to a hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Logan remained trapped inside the house and died during the 13-hour standoff.
The suspect, Isaac Alton Barnes, was identified as the shooter. Barnes also killed his stepfather, George Ligon, and his mother, Michelle Ligon, before taking his own life. The tragic event left the community in mourning and highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
Chris Ward was remembered as a loving husband and father, survived by his wife, Candice Hamby Ward, and their two daughters, Molly and Katie. He was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Chris began his law enforcement career at the Beech Mountain Police Department in 2013 and joined the Watauga County Sheriff's Department in 2018.
The community came together to honor Chris and Logan, with services held at the ASU Holmes Convocation Center and Green Valley Baptist Church. The procession was live-streamed, and a private family service followed. The loss of these officers was deeply felt, and their dedication to protecting others was celebrated.
