Gregory Alan Gaines, a 61-year-old white male, was tragically killed on November 18, 2021, in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Gaines, originally from Traverse City, Michigan, had been residing in Western North Carolina since 1980. He was a family man, survived by his wife and six children. Gaines was found deceased at East Asheville Storage on U.S. 70 in Swannanoa, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office responded to the call about the gunshot victim at 10:30 a.m.
on the day of the incident.
The investigation revealed that Randall Scott McCaul, a 60-year-old white male from Buncombe County, was responsible for the shooting. McCaul and Gaines were known to each other, and the incident was the result of a dispute. McCaul was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder, felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle, and felony larceny of a firearm. He was held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond, making him ineligible for pre-trial release.
In March 2024, McCaul, now 63, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Gregory Alan Gaines. The evidence indicated that Gaines had confronted McCaul with a potentially deadly weapon, leading McCaul to use excessive force in self-defense. As a result, McCaul was sentenced to serve 111 to 146 months in prison. His sentence also included the original charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, larceny of a firearm, and breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Gaines' family was present in court for the sentencing and expressed their support for the sentence.
