Kwaze Walker, a 21-year-old male from Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, was fatally shot on July 31, 2022, in Leland, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on Night Harbor Drive. According to reports, officers from the Leland Police Department were called to the scene at 3:49 a.m., where they found Walker with a gunshot wound inside a residence.
Despite lifesaving efforts by EMS personnel and officers, Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Walker had entered the home and began a physical and verbal altercation with 19-year-old Deandre Davis, who was also present at the residence. During the altercation, Walker held Davis at gunpoint and assaulted him for approximately 45 minutes. Davis, who sustained various serious injuries, managed to retrieve his own firearm and fired at Walker, striking him in the torso. Davis then ran to a neighbor's house for help, and the neighbor called 911.
Devin Antone, a 19-year-old male from Lake Waccamaw, was also charged in connection with the incident. However, Antone was not responsible for Walker's death. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or inflict serious injury and first-degree kidnapping. Antone arrived at the scene with Walker and was not regarded as a suspect in Walker's death.
The Brunswick County District Attorney's Office conducted an investigation and determined that Davis acted in self-defense. The District Attorney's Office stated that Davis, a welcomed guest in the home, was held at gunpoint and beaten severely by Walker. Given the circumstances, Davis' use of deadly force was deemed reasonable, and no criminal charges were brought against him for Walker's death.
The case remains under investigation, with the Leland Police Department working closely with the Brunswick County District Attorney's Office to gather more information and ensure a thorough examination of the events leading to Walker's death.
