The Yancey County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about shots fired at the Woody residence on Smith
Johnson Road. Upon arrival, deputies were met with gunfire from Travis Caleb Woody, who was subsequently shot and killed by the deputies. Inside the home, the bodies of Chelsey, her parents, and her brother were discovered. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the victims were Chelsey Lanay Woody Miller, 28, her father, Herman Myron Woody, 57, and her mother, Sheila McCurry Woody, 52.
Chelsey Woody Miller was a devoted daughter, sister, and wife. She worked as a nurse at Mission Hospital, where she was known for her compassionate care. Chelsey and her husband, Justin Miller, had recently married on May 14, 2022, after praying for the perfect mate. The tragic loss of Chelsey and her family members has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew and loved them.
