Melvin Jacoby Wiley, a 16-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on August 25, 2022, in Graham, North Carolina. Melvin was a junior at Walter M. Williams High School and enjoyed sports, football, fishing, rapping, and video games. He was known for his love of the Lord and his close relationship with his family, especially his "MeMe." Melvin's untimely death has left a void in the lives of his parents, siblings, grandparents, and numerous relatives and friends.
The circumstances
surrounding Melvin's death were both shocking and heartbreaking. On the night of August 25, 2022, Melvin and another 16-year-old boy were found dead from gunshot wounds in the woods adjacent to the Graham Village Apartments on East Hanover Road. The discovery was made after a missing person's report was filed with the Burlington police, leading Graham police officers to return to the apartment complex and canvass the area. Initially, the police had responded to a "shots fired" call at the apartment complex, where they found an 18-year-old with a gunshot wound. The young man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into Melvin's death revealed that two juveniles, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old, were charged with first-degree murder in connection to the double homicide. The suspects, identified as Tyshon Wiley, a 17-year-old Black male, and Kymoni Melendez Poteat, a 14-year-old Black male, were taken into custody and faced multiple court hearings. Tyshon Wiley, who was identified as Melvin's cousin, confessed to being involved in the crime. Both suspects were held in secure custody at a youth detention center, with Tyshon Wiley's case being transferred to superior court, where he faced the possibility of two life sentences.
The motive behind the killings remains unclear, as family members of the victims and suspects struggled to understand what could have led to such a tragic outcome. The victims and suspects were known to "hang out" together, and the families were left in disbelief over the senseless violence that claimed the lives of two young boys. The community mourned the loss of Melvin Jacoby Wiley, a promising young man whose life was cut short by an act of violence that left many searching for answers and justice.
