Sergeant John William Bonnell III, aged 23, was shot and killed on July 10, 1979, in Saint Tammany Parish, Louisiana. He was working undercover as part of Operation Checkerboard, a narcotics operation, when he was killed. Bonnell was in the front seat of a vehicle with a confidential informant and another suspect when the suspect, without provocation, shot him in the back of the head. The suspect also shot the confidential informant, who survived by feigning death.
