In the spring of 2014, a domestic dispute in Houma, Louisiana, tragically escalated, ending the life of a young mother. Barbara D. 'Birdie' Baker, a 22-year-old female, was killed on March 28, 2014, in a violent confrontation that unfolded into a hostage situation. The incident led to the arrest of her boyfriend, 22-year-old Skylar Hayes.
The events began to unfold when the Houma Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious incident at a local housing complex.
Upon arrival, officers found Hayes barricaded inside a residence with Baker and their one-year-old child. Law enforcement established a perimeter and a SWAT team was dispatched to the scene.
Negotiators were able to make contact with Hayes and successfully secured the release of the infant. However, shortly after the child was brought to safety, the situation inside the home took a grim turn.
