In the summer of 2015, a violent act shattered the quiet of a Denham Springs neighborhood and left a family grieving. On the evening of July 18th, 29-year-old Brandon Pernell 'Jay' Jones, an African American man, was shot and killed on Summers Street. The attack was brutal and swift, with Jones sustaining three gunshot wounds at close range from a. 40-caliber pistol. The shots were to his neck, head, and the side of his chest, any one of which could have been fatal.
His brother, Deone Jones, was also present and was shot at, but thankfully escaped unharmed. The incident occurred near an abandoned barbershop, and the shooter fled the scene on foot before reportedly escaping in a car a few blocks away.
The Denham Springs Police Department launched an investigation into the city's first homicide in over a year. Their efforts led them to 18-year-old Timothy Demetre Clayton of Walker. Investigators determined that there was enough probable cause to arrest Clayton, and he was taken into custody and booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center. He faced serious charges of first-degree murder for the death of Brandon Jones and attempted first-degree murder for firing at Deone Jones. Despite the arrest, a specific motive for the shooting was not immediately released by the authorities, though they did not believe it to be gang-related.
Following his arrest, the legal process began for Timothy Demetre Clayton. While initially charged with first-degree murder, he later pleaded no contest to a lesser charge. Clayton was ultimately sentenced to 11 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of Brandon Jones.
