On New Year's Day in 2017, a grim discovery was made in a residence on Ross Road in Anacoco, Louisiana, marking a violent start to the new year. Inside the home, deputies from the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office found the bodies of 48-year-old Norma Sue Ross and 30-year-old Calvin Stubbs of Leesville. Both individuals had been fatally shot. The female victim, Norma Sue Ross, was a resident of Anacoco.
Witnesses at the scene quickly implicated a family member in the double homicide.
They identified the shooter as Norma Ross's nephew, 36-year-old Derrick Ross, also of Anacoco. According to their statements to law enforcement, Derrick Ross was responsible for the deaths of his aunt and Calvin Stubbs. Following the shootings, the suspect's whereabouts were unknown, prompting an immediate and intensive search of the surrounding area by law enforcement officers who secured the scene.
The search for the suspect concluded with a third tragic finding. Authorities located Derrick Ross's body in a wooded area near the residence where the initial crimes occurred. The Vernon Parish Coroner's Office later determined that Derrick Ross had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation into the incident continued, but the events were characterized as a double murder-suicide.
