On an otherwise ordinary day in Greensburg, Louisiana, the life of 20-year-old Angelica Hope Leray was tragically cut short. On August 30, 2017, the young woman, who was six months pregnant, was fatally shot while a passenger in a car. The events of that day unfolded as Leray was getting a ride home from her job at Hatfield's Grocery. The driver of the vehicle, Delvecio Torrence, noticed they were being followed by a silver car with no license plate and its lights off.
In an attempt to reach safety, he drove towards his home.
As Torrence turned onto Pistol Womack Lane, the pursuing vehicle pulled alongside his, and a barrage of bullets was fired into the car. Leray was struck by three gunshots, one to her upper back, another to her lower chest, and a third to her thigh. These wounds proved to be fatal for both her and her unborn child. Torrence also sustained a gunshot wound to his lower left abdomen but survived the attack. When questioned by authorities, Torrence identified the shooter as Dana Williams, Leray's 30-year-old ex-boyfriend from Franklinton.
The investigation led to the arrest of Williams, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for the death of Angelica Leray, first-degree feticide for the death of their unborn child, and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Delvecio Torrence. The case went to trial, where a jury composed of six men and six women heard the evidence presented. After approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts. Following his conviction, Dana Williams was scheduled for sentencing, facing the consequence of his violent actions that resulted in the loss of two lives and the serious injury of another.
